2020 for the industry will also meet us with: Heightened use of digital technologies including modernizing of legacy systems, more collaborative engagement on regulations and policies to enable industry growth, stronger focus on customer experience and value, firmer emphasis on talent and human capacity, strengthening the core with implementation of new-age defences on risk matters, ongoing diversification and balancing of growth with extended collective drive on financial inclusion and more effective emphasis on governance and code of conduct.

“As Deputy Chair to Tanzania Bankers Association and Director of TPSF, I was privileged to present significant progress made by the Banking Industry in Tanzania at the Business Community engagement coordinated by TPSF with the Government at JNICC, #daressalaam yesterday 18th Oct 2020. Some of the key industry achievements I outlined in last 5 years included:
– Private loans up from TZS 15.5 to 19.8 Trillion
– Total Assets of Banking sector up 17%, from TZS 26.3 to 33.5 Trillion
– Average lending Interest rates down from 22% to 14%
– Financial inclusion supported by MNO’s has crossed 65% nationwide
– Bank Branches have increased from 782 to 838
– Wakala’s have significantly increased from 3431 to 22481
– Major project investments supported through local banks financing capabilities include $1.46B for SGR and $737.5M for Mwalimu Nyerere Dam
– Average GDP Growth 6.8% elevating nation to Middle income status
– Average Inflation down to 4.7% ( now down to 3.2% in Jun 20) from 8.9%
– Stable exchange rate with reserves of about 6 months (up from 4 months)
– GePG launch has been a big enabler of payments at affordable rates. Bank Of Tanzania soon launching TIPS
– Bank of Tanzania collaboration with TBA has been a major enabler for the industry”
