“I was given the opportunity to discuss the idea of a growth mindset with students from University of Dar-es-Salaam.
What makes the great people great? It’s not their wealth, it’s not their physical attributes, it’s their ability to keep pushing, to keep working, and to keep learning. I have witnessed wealthy people who have given up at any sight of discomfort and I have witnessed the most talented people who have an “I don’t care” attitude.
One of the most inspirational stories is of the boxing match between Mohammed Ali and Sunny Liston. Liston was rendered as a natural, his power was legendary, his physique was rendered perfect, he had all the experience and strength. Their matchup was so ludicrous that the arena was only half full. With one ‘phantom punch’, Mohammed Ali knocked Liston down.
While the whole world didn’t believe in Mohammed Ali at the time, this is actually what Mohammed Ali was doing.
He studied Liston’s fighting style as well as his life outside the boxing ring and he spent hours studying the way his mind worked, he put in all the work, he trained hard well into the night even when no one was watching, this is how legends are created.
